Ups ‘n’ Downs – Stockport

Ups ‘n’ Downs, it’s had its share of ups and downs.

Quite literally – the former Wellington Inn has an upside facing onto the busy A6 Wellington Road, and a downside opening onto Mersey Square.

Its fortunes similarly something of a rollercoaster ride, from busy town centre pub, to edgy pseudo-club, populated by late night uniformed bus drivers, swaying on the metre square dance floor.

Latterly something of a disco party bus, going nowhere fast.

Known variously as Glitz, Bentley’s and the Bees Knees.

Finally, partial occupation by a forlorn pound shop – defying economic trends by closing.

An architectural curiosity and a blank faced, gap toothed greeting to the Town’s visitors, there is talk of conversion to flats under the council’s stewardship.

It seems like up to me.

  1. Used to drink in there a dn DJ downstairs at Archies. It was definitely haunted, not that I believe in all that, but somethings are hard to explain!!!

    1. Wow – I actually lived here briefly in the early 80’s as a small child…the accommodation upstairs was HUGE…..my parents ran it for a while (they worked for a brewery)…. I used to go to the skateboarding place opposite on Mersey Square….I found it exciting ! Such a shame it’s gone to the dogs….it was super-busy and the nightclub always packed when we were there….definitely haunted and my big brother swears blind he saw a ufo one night !

  2. This was my first home in 1979. My mum had me in stepping hill hospital and we all lived here as my nana and granddad ran the pub. Barbara and Jack Richmond. I was trying to find pictures of the inside.

    1. Hi Janine

As I previously said I too lived there as a little girl – weird ! I remember the accommodation for us had 2 bathrooms which I thought the height of luxury at the time. Also a HUGE elephant in the bar…I remember lying in bed at night listening to the jukebox from the bar…and even the thump of the disco .. real shame to see it now….and yes I would love to see it inside now from the perspective of an adult…it probably isn’t that big after all !

  3. My mum and dad ran the ups and downs probably 80 81 . Used to sit and watch the planes go over. Went down to the club and watched incredible northern soul dancing.

    1. Hi Chris…you are so right…mixed fortunes at that pub…it was so many different things! It never really had a proper identity. We ended up moving South (oh no!) I really wish THAT had never happened ! For many years our old Head Bouncer from the Ups ‘n’ Downs visited us…until he got banged up for dealing…!! You cannot believe how shocked we were! That aside I would move back North in a shot if I could!

  4. Worked there mid 80’s after Burtonwood renovated the pub and Mark and Chris from Leek took over the tenancy. The pub was on three levels, it was a good renovation but wrong location. Walked out one day, never looked back. Ones past gets demolished 😉

    1. Such an amazing building back in its day – when pubs were pubs and were full of revellers….bit of a shame really that its left to rot…part of so many peoples histories….!
