From Ardwick Green in the west to Abbey Hey in the east – runs Hyde Road Manchester.
It’s a a road I have travelled from my early teens onwards, visiting friends, family, speedway, school sports days, fun and frolics at Belle Vue, tea and toast in Sivori’s, bike parts from Cowans. Working at the former Bishop Greer School, drinking in it’s many pubs, going to the flicks at the Apollo.
It was an area thick with the hustle and bustle of folks going about their business – working, shopping, boozing, waltzing in the Elizabethan, or the waltzers, bobbing up and down on the Bobs. A self contained community, just about prosperous enough in times of full employment – take just one more walk with me.

Loved this happy days I spent until 9yrs, then moved to Wythenshawe, my brother mostly stayed with our Gran in Marsland street, couldn’t settle in Wythenshawe, missed his friends he was 13yrs, great Photo’s.

There’s a rare photo above of the Hyde Road railway station that was closed in 1958. The bridge that crossed Hyde Road was recently removed (in 2020) for road-widening.

Hyde Rd. never ran into Abbey Hey as stated at the start of this great piece, From Ardwick green it went through West Gorton- Gorton -Reddish Bridge, then at Thornley Park Gorton ran out of Manchester into Denton. Abbey Hey was more on the Ashto Old Rd . side

In 1954 I lived on Hyde Road facing the bus depot The shop was called Crossley’s and ,it was next to the star pup ….
